The uncertainty surrounding Mohamed Salah continues to dominate discussion ahead of his final Liverpool game in Sunday’s meeting with Brentford at Anfield, with Lewis Steele and Dave Davis dedicating a major section of Anfield Index’s Media Matters podcast to the Egyptian’s future and his recent public comments.
Steele strongly defended Salah after the forward’s recent statement referencing Liverpool’s loss of “heavy metal football”, describing the comments as entirely justified given the decline supporters have witnessed this season.
“Everything he said was right,” Steele said.
That view framed much of the conversation as Liverpool prepare for what Davis carefully described as a day that “needs to be about celebration”.
One of the central talking points from the podcast was Salah’s willingness to publicly challenge the direction Liverpool are heading. Steele acknowledged there had been debate around whether the forward should have spoken out so openly, but insisted the criticism reflected the reality supporters have watched unfold all season.
“The standards have slipped,” Steele said plainly.
He also rejected suggestions that Salah had overstepped by indirectly criticising Slot and the club’s hierarchy. Instead, Steele argued that Salah’s standing within Liverpool gives him every right to demand more from the team and those running it.
“He has earned the right to say that the standards have dropped because they have,” Steele explained.
That defence of Salah was rooted in the forward’s contribution across nearly a decade at Liverpool. Steele described him as “the best player of the last decade at Liverpool” and argued that few players have done more to restore Liverpool to elite status.
“Salah transformed the team to winners,” Steele said elsewhere during the discussion.
The podcast also explored the emotional backdrop surrounding Sunday’s game against Brentford. Davis noted that there is growing concern around how the occasion could unfold if Liverpool head into the final day still under pressure to secure Champions League qualification.
Steele agreed that Liverpool desperately need matters settled before kick off.
“It’s better if there’s nothing at all for the non Liverpool fans to care about at Anfield on Sunday,” he said.

“You want Champions League football because otherwise it’s almost like the whole progress they’ve made while them lot have been there, you go back to where you started from,” Steele warned.
That sentiment captured the wider anxiety surrounding Liverpool’s current position. The fear is not simply about losing matches, but about watching one of the club’s defining modern eras come to an uncertain end.
