After establishing himself as a regular starter in TSG Hoffenheim’s midfield since his move from Stoke City last summer, Wouter Burger has played a key role in the Sinsheim club's impressive third-place campaign in the Bundesliga so far.
A Dutch youth international, the 25-year-old central midfielder has yet to receive his first senior team call-up, and with the World Cup approaching, he is naturally hopeful of getting that opportunity.
“I’ve played for all my age groups up to the U21. I haven’t heard anything yet, but I’m just continuing and will be ready if I get the call. You can only focus on what you can influence,” Burger told Sport Bild.
“When I came to Hoffenheim, I didn’t think I’d quickly make it to the national team and go to the World Cup. But we’re playing such a great season that everything is possible.”
In the interview, Burger also revealed that FC Barcelona was his dream club growing up.
“When I was little, I was a huge Messi fan. I remember one Clásico where Barça beat Real Madrid 5-0. That was a great time when I watched a lot of football. But there are really many great clubs in Europe, and nowadays I don’t say anymore, ‘That’s my dream club.’”
Burger has scored five goals and provided nine assists in 23 games for third-placed Hoffenheim so far.
