The regular season is over, and NJ/NY Gotham FC is about to begin their third NWSL Playoffs in a row when the postseason begins this upcoming weekend. Now, the Bats did not have the greatest end to the season, winning just once in their last six NWSL matches. It did not help that the Bats lost 3-2 to the North Carolina Courage on Decision Day.
As a result of their recent poor form, Gotham FC has gone from a top-four team a few matches ago to ending the season in eighth place. In other words, they ended the year in the last playoff position.
More importantly, the rough end means that the team will play the Kansas City Current on the road in the quarterfinals. But what else should fans know about the NWSL Playoffs?
As mentioned, Gotham FC must play an away game in Kansas City in the quarterfinals. The match will occur on Sunday, November 9, at 12:30 PM ET. The earlier fixture means that fans will not have to wait the whole day to know whether the Bats will move on. Still, they must wait until Sunday.
It will be extremely difficult to beat the NWSL Shield winners, who only lost three times in the regular season. Plus, the Current beat Gotham in both matches this year. In complete honesty, the likelihood of the NJ/NY side moving on is very slim.
However, if the team does move on, then they will face the winner of the match between the Orlando Pride and Seattle Reign FC. The Bats and the Pride won their respective road fixtures against one another. Then, the Reign matches ended in draws both times during the regular season. Hence, it would be impossible to predict whether the NJ/NY side would win against either team.
If, by chance, Gotham goes all the way to the championship game, then the team would face the Washington Spirit, Racing Louisville FC, San Diego Wave FC, or Portland Thorns FC. Of the four, funny enough, the only team the Bats did not lose to this year was the Washington Spirit. They beat the D.C. team on the road and then shared the points in the other regular-season match. They also tied in the CONCACAF W Champions Cup meeting.
One might say that Gotham would have the best opportunity against the Spirit. But truth be told, the poor end to the regular season makes it feel like the Bats could not win against anyone. But then again, anything can happen.
Notably, the semifinals will take place during the weekend of November 15-16, and the finals will occur on November 22. Regardless of what happens, Gotham FC will only play a maximum of three more games in 2025.
