Former AC Milan and Roma striker Antonio Cassano has shown a lot of faith in Inter Milan head coach Cristian Chivu.

Speaking to Corriere della Sera via FCInterNews, Cassano also delivered his verdict on last weekend’s Milan derby.

Despite lacking experience in senior management, Cristian Chivu has defied expectations in his first season at San Siro.

Indeed, the 45-year-old is on the verge of leading Inter to their 21st Scudetto.

With only ten games left to play, the table-topping Nerazzurri sit seven points clear of second-placed AC Milan.

Furthermore, they’re potentially 90 minutes away from securing a place in the Coppa Italia grand final.

Therefore, a first league double since 2010 remains firmly on the cards.

However, Inter suffered a shocking Champions League exit in the first knockout round at the hands of Bodo/Glimt.

That remains the only blemish on Chivu’s otherwise impressive maiden season in charge of the club.

Antonio Cassano Expects Cristian Chivu to Revolutionize Inter Milan Next Term

“He’s exceeding all expectations,” Cassano said. “He comes from the Ajax philosophy, and I’m convinced that next year he will change Inter, playing with a back four. A wide restructuring will be needed.

“They need two midfielders because Calhanoglu will go to Turkey, and Barella even struggles to keep running. The problem with a 4-2-3-1 is having strong wingers, which are expensive, as is a deep-lying midfielder like Lobotka, who, in my view, will join Spalletti.”

Then, he offered his view of the Milan derby.

“Let’s start by saying that Modric is one of the greats in history, but the derby was terrible. We’re moving too slowly, without rhythm, without quality. I’ve been saying it for years, even if I say it bluntly.”

“He’s a great kid, humble, hardworking. However, last year, he played in Serie B, and now, as a starter, he feels the pressure. We shouldn’t put too much weight on his shoulders, with comparisons like the one to Vieri.”
