Former Arsenal and England youth international Arthur Okonkwo has made his senior debut for Nigeria, keeping a clean sheet in a friendly against Zimbabwe.

Despite some claims in late 2025 that FIFA had approved a nationality switch for former Arsenal goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo to swap England for Nigeria, further reports later confirmed that Okonkwo didn’t actually need FIFA clearance to do so.

Whilst the Wrexham goalkeeper did represent England at various youth levels, none of those appearances came in competitive fixtures. As such, he was never tied to England.

As a result, Okonkwo was free to make his debut for the Nigeria senior side on Tuesday, playing 90 minutes in a 2-0 win for the team over Zimbabwe.

All players are permitted one nationality switch, provided they meet certain conditions. And given Okonkwo didn’t need to make one this time, that means he’s still eligible to do so in future.

In the case of players who have only played in senior friendlies, the only conditions for a switch are that they have a three-year cooling-off period since their last international appearance, and that they can prove a valid connection to their new country (birth, parents, five-year residency, etc.).

Hypothetically, that means London-born Okonkwo could still play for England, but not for a minimum of three years from his appearance on Tuesday.

In reality, that three-year waiting period is likely to encourage him to stick with Nigeria from now on.

Nigeria didn’t qualify for the 2026 World Cup, so Okonkwo won’t be able to represent the team at the tournament (which would have locked him into playing for Nigeria permanently, for what it’s worth).

But the goalkeeper could get another chance to represent Nigeria over the next couple of weeks, with more friendlies scheduled against Poland (June 3rd) and Portugal (June 10th).
