Inter Milan midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan admits that yesterday’s Serie A clash with Venezia was a “strange” match.

The 35-year-old spoke to Italian broadcaster SportMediaset, via FCInterNews. He also hinted at why he things the Nerazzurri have had some defensive struggles so far this season.

Inter did get the result they were after against Venezia yesterday evening.

The Nerazzurri took three points to capitalize on Napoli’s defeat against Atalanta earlier in the day. They are now just one point off of top spot.

That is a positive. But there is also a sense that Inter will struggle to defend their title if they keep having the kinds of matches that they did yesterday.

The Nerazzurri were able to keep a clean sheet. But they had to rely on some excellent saves by goalkeeper Yann Sommer. There was also some late drama that saw a Venezia equalizer ruled out in stoppage time.

And at the other end of the pitch, Inter were profligate in front of goal.

Part of that came down to Venezia keeper Filip Stankovic – currently on loan from Inter – making a sequence of outstanding stops himself.

But Inter’s finishing was also far from clinical.

The end result of all that was that Inter won by a narrow scoreline, but in a topsy-turvy match with plenty of goalmouth action and drama.

After the final whistle, Inter midfielder Mkhitaryan admitted that “It turned into a very strange match.”

“Because we failed to take our chances in the first half. But also in the second.”

Meanwhile, Mkhitaryan also gave his thoughts on why Inter are still struggling to contain counterattacks this season.

That was once again on show yesterday, evening if Inter managed not to concede.

“I don’t think it’s a physical thing,” Mkhitaryan argued. This in spite of the large amount of matches Inter have been playing.

The former Arsenal and Roma veteran argued it’s “more of a mental issue.”

“Every now and then, we switch off,” Mkhitaryan admitted. “We don’t keep ourselves focused on a situation right to the end.”
