Buongiorno’s name was always likely to be a big one in the summer transfer window in Serie A.

The 25-year-old was one of the outstanding defenders in the Italian top flight last season.

Buongiorno is also a player who is at his best when playing in the centre of a back three. This makes him of interest to several top clubs in Serie A who play with a back-three system.

Atalanta had tried to sign Buongiorno last summer. However, he chose to stay at Torino instead.

But this time around, the race for Buongiorno came down to Napoli and Inter.

Conte Decisive In Alessandro Buongiorno Choosing Napoli Over Inter

It has been Napoli rather than Inter who have been negotiating with Torino for much of the summer so far.

The Partenopei have marked Buongiorno out as the perfect player to build their defense around under new coach Antonio Conte.

Napoli have agreed a deal worth €35 million plus €5 million in add-ons with the Granata.

However, Inter have come in with a later interest.

The Nerazzurri did make a last-ditch approach to Torino.

Inter had perhaps hoped that they could turn Buongiorno’s head, with the prospect of joining the reigning Italian champions rather than a team who endured a very tough season last time out.

However, Buongiorno believes that playing under Conte will get the best out of him.

The former Inter, Juventus, and Chelsea coach has a positive track record with defenders in a back three.

Therefore, the 25-year-old has made his decision. He will stick with the move to Napoli rather than waiting to see if Inter can reach an agreement with Torino.
