Ex-Corinthians president claims club repayment, no proof given

The former president of Corinthians, Duilio Monteiro Alves, gave a statement to the São Paulo Public Prosecutor's Office (MP-SP) this Thursday (13), online, regarding the use of the corporate card during his administration. The hearing is part of the ongoing investigations into the case, a few weeks after former president Andrés Sanchez was also charged for irregular expenses.

During the hearing, Duilio admitted personal expenses of R$ 1,300, claiming that all were reimbursed immediately after the expenses, but he did not present receipts at the time of the statement and was advised to attach documents and invoices to the process. According to the former leader, the total expenses on the corporate card over three years do not exceed R$ 35,000 (see note at the end of this article).

Among the expenses addressed by prosecutor Cássio Conserino was a purchase of about R$ 5,500 at the Duty Free at Ezeiza Airport in Argentina – which according to Duilio, were related to speakers for the club. Additionally, expenses at a supermarket, hairdresser, restaurant, and an online store were mentioned.

Besides the former president's statement, the prosecutor scheduled a new hearing for the following week with Roberto Gavioli, the club's financial manager at the time, to respond in writing about the same facts. Gavioli is already charged by the MP-SP, accused of failing to act to oversee Andrés' personal expenses during his management at the club.

Right after the statement, Duilio released a note detailing what he declared to the MP. Check it out in full:

“The former president of Sport Club Corinthians Paulista, Duílio Monteiro Alves, presented, quickly and objectively, clarifications on all requested topics to the Public Prosecutor's Office, fulfilling exactly what he always stated he would do.

The hearing proceeded with complete calm and transparency, reflecting the collaborative stance that the former president has maintained since the beginning of the procedure.

It is worth clarifying that the amounts spent identified as “personal” were reimbursed to the club immediately after the expenses were made, and in total do not exceed R$ 1,300 during the 3-year term.

Duílio made it clear that during his term at the head of Corinthians, he always acted with respect, responsibility, and prudence in managing the club's expenses, remaining calm and confident that the facts will be fully clarified.”
