Matteo Darmian has been named as Inter Milan’s outstanding player in yesterday evening’s Serie A win over Lecce.

Today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, give the 34-year-old a score of 7.5/10 in the player ratings for the match, the highest of any Inter player.

Darmian is not exactly the most prolific goalscorer in Inter’s squad.

But the Italian international has made a habit of being decisive when he does pop up with goals.

Darmian famously scored winners against Hellas Verona and Cagliari in 1-0 victories in the title run-in during the 2020-21 season.

Prior to yesterday, the veteran former Manchester United and Torino defender’s most recent goal for Inter had come in a 1-1 draw in March.

And in the home opener for his fifth season at Inter, Darmian once again proved crucial.

It was not an easy header for the 34-year-old. He met a flick-on by Mehdi Taremi from a Federico Dimarco cross.

There was a lot of pace and spin on the ball that Darmian needed to divert. But the versatile defender had enough time to track the flight of the ball and send it past Lecce keeper Wladimiro Falcone.

Naturally, Darmian’s goal was the highlight reel moment.

But it was not the only way in which the 34-year-old was key for Inter.

Darmian also had an excellent performance defensively. He played a key role in keeping Lecce winger Lameck Banda quiet.

The 34-year-old showed why Inter coach Simone Inzaghi continues to trust him to play from the start ahead of Denzel Dumfries.

Both positionally and in terms of his marking and tackling, Darmian did not put a foot wrong.

In the end, Darmian exemplified a mature and businesslike performance by Inter for their first win of the season.
