Ex-Premier League footballer Joey Barton has been remanded in custody after appearing at Liverpool Magistrates’ Court charged over an alleged assault near a golf club.

According to Sunderland Echo, the 43-year-old, from Widnes, Cheshire, is accused of assault occasioning grievous bodily harm alongside Gary O’Grady, 50, from Huyton, Merseyside. In a brief Tuesday afternoon hearing on 10 March, both men spoke only to confirm their identities.

They are alleged to have attacked Kevin Lynch at Fairway, Huyton, on Sunday, 8 March. Prosecutor Chelsea Kearns said Mr Lynch, 51, had been drinking at Huyton and Prescot Golf Club with the defendants, and that footage appeared to show Mr Lynch and Barton in a heated exchange.

The men then went outside, where a witness reported seeing an assault and an ambulance was called. Mr Lynch is in a serious but stable condition in hospital, and there is a possibility he may lose sight in one eye.

The case has been sent to Liverpool Crown Court for a plea hearing on 7 April. District Judge James Hatton set the date, and Barton is to remain in custody until then. O’Grady was released on conditional bail.

Barton has also been charged with wounding with intent.
