Former Serie A referee Gianpaolo Calvarese slammed Daniele Doveri for his dubious call in yesterday’s clash between AC Milan and Inter.

During his latest interview via FCInter1908, Calvarese assessed Doveri’s performance in Sunday’s Derby della Madonnina.

AC Milan claimed bragging rights in last night’s derby, securing a narrow 1-0 win, courtesy of Pervis Estupinan’s goal.

Meanwhile, Cristian Chivu faltered in another high-stakes fixture, with Inter performing below expectations in this top-table six-pointer.

Despite boasting the best scoring record in Serie A this season, the Nerazzurri failed to create many opportunities.

Indeed, they finished the game with a disappointing 0.53 xG.

However, they did score in second-half stoppages, only for Daniele Doveri to rule it out, having previously blown the whistle to stop the play.

Though the ball was already in mid-air when Doveri halted proceedings, he disallowed what would’ve been a last-minute equalizer.

Needless to say, his decision left all Inter players and coaching staff fuming.

Gianpaolo Calvarese Slams Daniele Doveri After AC Milan 1-0 Inter Milan Controversy

Calvarese insists the 48-year-old made a correct call when he decided not to penalize Samuele Ricci’s handball.

“Was there a penalty for Inter for Ricci’s handball at the end of the derby? Let’s break it down. Dumfries heads the ball, and Ricci does indeed intercept it with his right arm,” Calvarese stated.

“However, the limb is in a natural position, doesn’t make his body bigger, and from a replay, you can clearly see the Milan midfielder even tries to move it away. In addition, the ball comes from very close range, which is why, in my opinion, it was correct not to award a penalty.”

However, he believes Doveri made a mistake during that corner-kick incident.

“On the other hand, Doveri was wrong on the corner kick incident,” Calvarese added. “The referee blew the whistle immediately after the ball was played.

“Some players stopped, others didn’t, and the ball ended up in the net. Remember, once the corner is taken, the ball is in play, and any intervention should have been made while the game was stopped, not during active play.”
