The Saints suffered relegation from the Premier League last term in dismal fashion, winning just twice all season and recording a measly 12 points, a total only worsened by Derby County’s 2007/08 campaign in the competition’s history.

There was hope at St. Mary’s that a return to the second-tier would see the South Coast outfit return to winning ways on a consistent basis, but that hasn’t proven to be the case.

With Will Still appointed as the man to lead Southampton forward and new signings such as Tom Fellows, Finn Azaz and Caspar Jander adding to their pool of talent, many predicted the Saints to be one of the promotion favourites.

However, Still’s side have won two of their first 11 matches and have drawn on six occasions. They’ve picked up just a single victory in their last 10 league outings, with a 3-1 defeat at Bristol City the most recent humiliation.

Although a hangover from last season’s horror show was always likely to impact Southampton’s performances, pressure is already starting to mount on their new manager as the gap between league leaders Coventry and themselves increases.

The Saints already have a 13-point deficit to make up and that looks like growing in size rather than reducing based on recent results.

One key point of interest from Southampton’s defeat against Bristol City was the sight of former Saints boss Ralph Hasenhuttl being spotted in the crowd.

The 58-year-old was in charge at St. Mary’s from 2018-2022, during a time when Southampton remained a competitive Premier League outfit.

Times have changed dramatically since then, which has led to some of the South Coast outfit’s faithful to call for Hasenhuttl to take over from Still.

“Bring him back now,” stated one frustrated Southampton supporter. “Before it's too late.”

“Hmmmm I think I’ve got a great idea,” hinted another.

Some fans pondered what Hasenhuttl must make of the Saints’ current situation, after he kept them in the top-flight successfully for so long.

“He must be so disappointed with the club after what he did to keep us in the Prem,” commented one of the St. Mary’s faithful.

Rather comedically, one member of the Southampton supporter base decided to suggest their former boss could be the answer to the club’s problems in front of goal.

“Put him up front next game,” joked the fan.

Will Still must turn Southampton’s performances around soon

Although a settling-in period may have been expected for Still at the start of his Southampton tenure, results are now starting to verge on the border of worrying.

The Saints struggle to take control of matches and use their star players to turn the tide in their favour, which has ultimately led to an overwhelming number of stalemates thus far.

Southampton enjoy more quality in their ranks than most other teams in the second-tier, so to be 17th in the standings after 11 matches is simply unacceptable.

Still must find a solution to the South Coast outfit’s problems sooner rather than later, or his time could soon be up at St. Mary’s.
