Ex-Sunderland boss Jack Ross takes Assistant Sporting Director role at Newcastle United | OneFootball

Former Sunderland boss Jack Ross has been promoted to Assistant Sporting Director at Newcastle United, the move coming after two departures from the club’s recruitment team this month.

In a LinkedIn post, Ross said he was excited about the move. He now works directly alongside sporting director Ross Wilson. Both are Scots from Falkirk.

Head of Recruitment Steve Nickson has joined Wrexham as sporting director. Senior football executive Andy Howe, nephew of former head coach Eddie Howe, left the club after the summer transfer window closed.

Ross led Sunderland from May 2018 to October 2019, taking them to fifth in his first season and a play-off final lost 2-1 to Charlton Athletic. They were also beaten by Portsmouth on penalties in the EFL Trophy final after a 2-2 draw at Wembley. He was sacked early in 2019/20 with the team sixth in League One, and they later slipped to eighth before earning promotion a year later.

He joined Newcastle in March 2023 as Head of Coach Development in the academy, then moved to Head of Strategic Technical Football Partnerships. In July last year he became Head of Football Strategy, a leadership role aimed at embedding a consistent sporting philosophy across the men’s, women’s and academy teams. His remit has included building relationships with other clubs, creating development and pathway opportunities in the UK and overseas, and overseeing the club’s player loan and emerging talent strategy.
