Former Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Brent Carelse has weighed in on whether Miguel Cardoso is still the right man for the job amid a slow start to the season.

The Brazilians are currently in second place with 15 points accumulated on the Betway Premiership standings after securing four wins and three draws in the first seven league outings.

In addition, the Tshwane giants were knocked out of the MTN8 semi-final by Orlando Pirates, extending their domestic cup drought, with the club’s last glory dating back to the 2021/22 season.

As a result, the Masandawana faithful expressed their displeasure with the team’s showing this season, much to the understanding of Carelse, who exclusively spoke to Foot Africa.

“It’s a team that wants result, but I’m not going to say he must go or stay. Obviously, the supporters are frustrated because the results are not coming, but Sundowns are known as slow starters, so let’s see how season goes,” he told Foot Africa.

While he acknowledges the supporters’ frustrations, the ex-Downs midfield maestro has called for patience on Cardoso’s project, stressing that it’s still early in the season to judge the Portuguese.

“I would go the patience side; you don’t want to be pulling the trigger too early. It’s the sixth game in the league, they missed out on the cup [MTN8] yes, but let’s see,” Carelse added.

Sundowns will be determined to get back to winning ways when they host Durban City at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday following a one-all draw with Marumo Gallants midweek.
