Seven months ago, the Los Angeles Galaxy made it to their tenth-ever MLS Cup Finals. One of the players who helped get them there last season couldn't play in the championship.
Instead, Spanish midfielder Riqui Puig watched from the sidelines as he suffered a torn ACL during the MLS Western Conference Finals the week before. Though the Los Angeles Galaxy managed to win their sixth MLS Cup without him, they have struggled tremendously this season in his absence.
The LA Galaxy went winless in their first 16 games to ope up the season. Since then, they have a gone 2-2-1 as their only blemish is a 2-0 defeat against the Colorado Rapids.
To be honest, let's not get overly excited thinking Puig is playing this Saturday against D.C. United and save the defending champion's season.
The Los Angeles Galaxy are still in last place despite their best five game-stretch at any point this year. They have one of the league's worst offenses and somehow their defense is even worse than that.
Puig has 13 goals and 16 assists last year during the regular season. He managed to contribute on seven addition goal scores during the playoffs (four goals and three assists).
Christian Ramirez and Marco Reus have four goals each this season. Diego Fagundez, Gabriel Pec and Joseph Paintsil all have three on the year, while Matheus Nascimento has two so far. That accounts for 86% of the LA Galaxy's scoring.
Puig was a part of the 'Killer P's," who along with former teammate Dejan Joveljic set an MLS record with all four players scoring at least ten goals in the same season.
Pec and Paintsil are still under contract after this season. Puig is, too. Head Coach Greg Vanney and General Manager Will Kuntz will have their work cut out for them this winter when they make the necessary adjusments to the roster, from top to bottom.
Regardless of how that looks, the LA Galaxy and their fans will be happy to see the soon-to-be 26-year-old back on the field, lighting up the scoreboard.
