Blues are hoping to move into their new home by the summer of 2030

Birmingham City's first season back at Championship level might not have gone fully according to script, but those connected to the club are certainly remaining optimistic about what the future holds.

Tom Wagner's three-year spell as Blues owner thus far has given the West Midlands outfit plenty of media attention for both good and bad reasons, but there is no denying that the American is one of the most ambitious owners in football at this particular moment.

After suffering relegation to League One just months after taking over at St. Andrew's @ Knighthead Park, the 56-year-old responded by installing Chris Davies as manager, with the former Tottenham Hotspur assistant subsequently overseeing a record-breaking campaign in which 111 points were accrued.

As such, plenty of hype surrounded Birmingham as they marked their return to the Championship with an exciting spree of spending in the summer transfer window, before conducting yet another major squad reshuffle in January after a mixed first half of the season.

However, after pressure initially began to resurface on the shoulders of Davies after a dismal run of form prior to the final international break of the campaign, which effectively ended Blues' faint hopes of a first play-off berth in the second tier for 14 years, they did end the season in largely impressive form, going unbeaten in their final five games to finish 10th, nine points behind the top six.

Whilst plenty of focus will also be on what activity is conducted in the summer amid the introduction of new squad cost rules, Blues fans have already seen new developments emerge concerning the future construction of the 62,000-seater Powerhouse stadium, with another dropping this week.

Plans for the new Sports Quarter development on the site of Birmingham Wheels have been in the pipeline for over two years now, but last November, the chimney-themed new stadium design, along with the 'Powerhouse' name, were revealed by the club at Digbeth Loc Studios.

Last summer, funding of a West Midlands Metro line from Birmingham city centre to the Sports Quarter, which will also include training facilities and further retail and commercial hubs, as well as thousands of job opportunities for locals, effectively green-lighted the project.

And, after the club's head of infrastructure, Nick Smith, recently revealed that planning permission will be submitted in approximately March 2027 to Birmingham City Council, West Midlands Mayor, Richard Parker, has now announced a 'Mayoral Development Corporation' which will look to speed up the regeneration of East Birmingham and potentially bring £11bn worth of investment to the city.

One of the five projects concerned is the Sports Quarter complex, with Parker stating: “The MDC in total will attract around £11 billion pounds of investment; create 50,000 new jobs and 20,000 new homes.

“It’s a really ambitious project that’s going to change the lives and create opportunities for tens of thousands of people across Birmingham.”

“The MDC is a really ambitious project,” he added. “We’re going to create a new delivery vehicle that’s going to be focused explicitly on building out these sites.

“Importantly it was put in place to streamline planning; quicken the pace of delivery; allow us to acquire sites and remedy brownfield (land) really quickly."

Having fallen short in terms of pushing for the play-offs in the current Championship season, it will be expected that Birmingham and their American investors will not be deterred.

It is well-documented that the aim is to return to the Premier League for the first time since 2011 as soon as possible, before looking to progress even further with an increased flow of revenue streams and match-going supporters at the Powerhouse, which has been scheduled to open in the summer of 2030.

Next season will also be intriguing as seventh and eighth place will also join the post-season lottery of the play-offs, which could, in turn, speed up a realisation of the dreams which Wagner has harboured for so long.
