EFL pundit Callum Fowler believes West Ham will easily beat Reading's 106-point tally, and could possibly beat Birmingham's, too

EFL pundit Callum Fowler believes that West Ham United will surpass Reading's Championship record 106-point tally, and could even beat Birmingham City's EFL record 111-point haul this season, following the Hammers' 6-0 win over Wrexham.

Nuno Espírito Santo's side are starting to find their groove in the second tier, winning their last four games and scoring an impressive 16 goals in the process, culminating in Friday night's drubbing of the side that finished seventh last season.

Six different players got on the scoresheet at the London Stadium against Wrexham, including every one of the dangerous-looking front four.

Evidently, defences can't just put their focus on stopping Jarrod Bowen, as the likes of Joel Piroe, Taty Castellanos and Manor Solomon are all terrifying marksmen when they're all singing off the same hymn sheet.

The win on Friday took West Ham to the Championship's summit, and while Middlesbrough can knock them off with a win on Tuesday night against Millwall, EFL content creator Callum Fowler believes that Nuno's side will remain atop the table for the foreseeable future.

Speaking on the latest episode of the Pyramid podcast, Fowler made the bold prediction that the Hammers will overtake Reading's Championship points record of 106 points, a record which has stood for over two decades.

He also believes that Birmingham's 111-point total in the 2024/25 League One campaign, which stands as the all-time EFL points record for a single season, could be in danger of being broken, too.

"I seriously think they'll get close to Birmingham's [points total]," Fowler said. "They dropped points 12 times, lost three games and drew nine. Will West Ham drop points 12 times this season? I think they'll get Reading's."

"You say it like it's easy," said Jimmy Smith, a guest on the podcast and FLW's Sheffield United fan pundit. "Yeah," Fowler replied. "When have we had someone like West Ham in this league?

"They've got the second-biggest attendance in the country; with the money they have, we haven't seen a team like this in the league."

How good West Ham will need to be to break points records this season

West Ham have already dropped points on three occasions this season. They let a two-goal lead slip on opening day against Burnley, lost at home to Charlton Athletic and drew away at Watford.

Right now, they're averaging a smooth two points per game, with 14 in seven outings. In comparison, Reading averaged 2.3 over the course of a 46-game campaign to register 106 back in 2005/06, and a couple of years ago, Birmingham averaged 2.41.

To break the Championship record, Nuno's side will need to finish on 107 points, collecting 93 points in 39 games from this point on. That's a PPG record of 2.38 between now and the end of the season.

For Birmingham's record to be in danger of being breached, West Ham will need to pick up 112 points, with 98 of them coming in the next 39 games. That's a PPG record of 2.51.

The Hammers can only afford to drop 19 points between now and the end of the campaign to break an EFL record. If their performance levels can be maintained from the Wrexham win, perhaps it could be possible?

West Ham's performance level and their ruthlessness in front of goal in the last four games have been very impressive, but there'll still be some scepticism over whether that can be maintained throughout the campaign and, more importantly, against better opposition.

When you look at who Nuno's side have faced in the early stages, four of the seven teams they've faced are currently in the bottom six, with the Watford game making it five from the current bottom eight.

The other two sides they've faced are in the top seven alongside them, but one of them, Charlton, they lost to.

There's an argument to be made that West Ham have had a bit of a fortunate start in that some of the expected "tough" opponents have been very slow out of the blocks. Additionally, their performances away from the London Stadium haven't been that convincing, either.

You can only beat what's in front of you, though, and there'll be some West Ham fans feeling they haven't gotten out of second gear, yet they're still occupying top spot.
