Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim is understood to have given the club the green light to try to seal the return transfer of Angel Gomes from Lille.

The England international has impressed a great deal since leaving Man Utd as a youngster, and it seems his performances in Ligue 1 have convinced new Red Devils boss Amorim that he could be a useful asset for his squad.

Sources with a close understanding of the situation have informed CaughtOffside that United are not alone in their pursuit of Gomes, however, with a host of top Premier League clubs also keen on landing the 24-year-old.

Arsenal and Chelsea have also been monitoring Gomes, while it’s also felt that the likes of Manchester City, Liverpool, Tottenham and Newcastle could also get involved if he becomes available, as well as European giants Atletico Madrid and Napoli.

However, CaughtOffside understands that Gomes himself would favour a move back to Old Trafford if possible, with the player seeking a three-year contract plus the option of a further year on top of that.

What is Angel Gomes’ transfer situation?

Gomes has shone during his time at Lille, which means interest in him is no surprise, while his contract situation with the French club will also surely make him a tempting opportunity.

The former United youngster is currently on course to become a free agent in summer 2025, so that could help MUFC either sign him on the cheap this January, or else bring their former player back without having to pay anything next summer.

Still, waiting until Gomes becomes a free agent and able to talk to a number of other clubs could also allow the likes of Arsenal back into the race.

The Gunners have a clear need for more midfielders at the moment as both Thomas Partey and Jorginho are two other big names looking set to become free agents at the end of this season.

One imagines the Arsenal project might also prove more tempting than United given the latter’s ongoing struggles in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era, but Amorim seems very keen on the player, which will surely help convince him he’d have a key role back in Manchester.
