Manchester City have a busy summer ahead as they bid to rebuild Pep Guardiola’s squad. The need to bolster their midfield and the full-back positions appears to be obvious. But they could benefit from adding more quality to their attack. Their lack of cutting edge and wastefulness in front of goal did prove costly in Manchester City’s 1-nil defeat to Crystal Palace in Saturday’s FA Cup final. Now it has been revealed by Esteemed Kompany sources that AS Monaco winger Eliesse Ben Seghir has caught Manchester City’s eye. But they would face competition to sign him if they did pursue a move for the talented young winger.

Would Eliesse Ben Seghir be an improvement on what Manchester City already have?

This season, Eliesse Ben Seghir has predominantly played on the left wing for AS Monaco. In 46 appearances, he’s scored 9 goals and added 4 assists in statistics sourced from transfermarkt.com. Those numbers don’t jump off the page. But his talent does. Eliesse Ben Seghir is a versatile player who can play in a variety of roles. He can play on the left wing, as a number ten or behind a striker. His versatility is a weapon in his game.

Technically, he is blessed with superb technical ability. Ben Seghir is quick and also blessed with exceptional close control. He also plays well in tight spaces, and he looks to be a player who could slot into a Pep Guardiola squad. His passing ability does stand out as an attribute that would slot into the Manchester City squad.

But there does seem to be a problem. Is Eliesse Ben Seghir an upgrade on what Manchester City already have? You’d assume that if they signed Ben Seghir, he’d be looking to play on a wing. It’s not obvious that the young Moroccan winger would take the place of Jeremy Doku, Omar Marmoush or Savinho. While Eliesse Ben Seghir is a talented player with bags of potential, it remains to be seen if Manchester City would move for AS Monaco winger. Perhaps if someone leaves Manchester City this summer that may force their hand, so to speak.

It’s clear to see why Manchester City would be looking at Eliesse Ben Seghir as a player. He’s a talented young player who has his best years ahead of him. But there does appear to be more pressing issues in Manchester City’s squad to address rather than adding another winger at this stage.
