Don Goodman has told FLW his verdict on Carl Rushworth potentially earning an England call up in November

Don Goodman believes the best hope Coventry City have of signing Carl Rushworth on a permanent basis is if an option to buy clause was already agreed with Brighton.

According to talkSPORT, the goalkeeper is in line for a call up from Thomas Tuchel for the November internationals following his strong performances in Frank Lampard’s side.

The club are top of the Championship table going into November, and stand a great chance at earning automatic promotion if they can maintain this form over the coming months.

The 24-year-old has featured in 12 of their league games so far this term, having joined on loan from the Seagulls in the summer.

So far, he has kept six clean sheets and conceded just nine goals, which has reportedly caught the attention of the England manager.

Goodman has praised Rushworth’s performances so far this season, claiming he’s stepped up with big moments even if he hasn’t been needed too often.

Given the attention an England call-up will earn, the Sky Sports pundit believes the best hope the Championship side have of keeping the goalkeeper is if they already negotiated a buy option as part of his loan move from Brighton.

“I think everybody in a Sky Blues shirt has started exceptionally well this season, Carl Rushworth is no exception now,” Goodman exclusively told Football League World.

“It was a bit of a slow start for him, there were one or two goals going in where you kind of felt he could’ve done a bit better, but he’s more than made up for it, really.

“He’s been a revelation, and even in games where Coventry have gone on to win comfortably, he has been called on the odd time to pull off really important saves at important times in matches.

“Because we all know goals change games.

“The question of whether Coventry will struggle, may well depend on anything written into the deal, an option to buy or whether it was mandatory that they’d buy.

“Hopefully from Coventry’s perspective, they have got something written in which would allow them to buy him.

“Certainly, Brighton will be watching his progress with a keen eye.”

Coventry City’s promotion form

Coventry have earned 28 points from a possible 36, leaving them top of the Championship table.

Lampard’s side have scored more than any other side in the division, and only Middlesbrough and Stoke City have conceded fewer.

The Sky Blues reached the play-offs in the previous campaign, but missed out on promotion with a semi-final loss to Sunderland.

Next up for Coventry is a trip to face Wrexham on Friday night in an 8pm kick-off.

Promotion could help Coventry’s Carl Rushworth permanent transfer hopes

Bart Verbruggen has been Brighton’s first choice goalkeeper for the last couple of seasons now, so Rushworth will be up against the Dutchman when his loan spell ends at the CBS Arena.

But if Coventry can seal promotion to the Premier League this season, then perhaps that will smooth over any current problems standing in the way of a permanent deal.

The 24-year-old will be keen to compete in the top flight, and his performances this term suggest he may now be ready to take that step up.

There’s no doubt that Lampard will be keen to keep the shot-stopper around, as his performances have been impressive in recent weeks.
