Two Championship clubs are keen on swooping for Wrexham midfielder George Dobson

Derby County and Watford are set to battle for an out of favour Wrexham player ahead of Tuesday's transfer deadline, Football League World can exclusively reveal.

EFL clubs are starting to get their final deals into place for the first half of the season, and there's still plenty of business to be done - some of it will be done between divisional rivals.

A full fixture list of Championship, League One and League Two action this midweek complicates matters for managers and recruitment teams who have two big things to focus on, but it only strengthens the urgency to get transfers over the line as soon as possible.

And one club who will need to ship off some fringe players is Wrexham, who narrowly missed out on the Championship play-offs last season and still want to add some new signings to their squad after failing to win in any of their first three league outings.

The Red Dragons are likely to make a big splash in the final two days of the window, and players like George Dobson may end up having to depart the Racecourse Ground to make room.

There is interest though in the former Charlton Athletic captain, who has been pushed down the pecking order of Phil Parkinson's squad thanks to the summer arrival of Ben Whiteman from Preston North End.

Reported interest from League One sleeping giants Sheffield Wednesday was knocked back earlier in the summer, but having waited it out, Dobson now has two Championship sides on his case.

FLW understands that both Derby County and Watford are looking into a loan deal for Dobson ahead of tomorrow's 11pm deadline.

The 28-year-old played 40 times in the Championship last season for Wrexham, with the majority of them starts, scoring twice and notching two assists from a defensive midfield position.

Having appeared in Wrexham's opening weekend clash earlier this month with Cardiff City though, Dobson has been benched by Parkinson and wasn't even in the 20-man matchday squad for the loss to Birmingham on Friday.

Derby have already added to their midfield options this summer, with Alex Mowatt and Bobby Clark both arriving permanently from West Brom and Red Bull Salzburg respectively, but John Eustace is looking to add one more body to his engine room prior to the deadline.

And Watford are also looking into the conditions of a loan swoop for Dobson's services, in a deal that would represent a move closer to the birth place of Dobson - Harold Wood - if it were to get over the line.

The Hornets have added creative midfielder Martin Payero to their ranks this summer, but they may also look to recruit a new defensive midfielder in the mould of Dobson.

It's likely that Dobson will not be the only departure from Wrexham on deadline day or prior to it, should he leave that is, and there could be a decision to make in regards to which club he ends up at.
