Don Goodman has spoken to FLW about Tommy Doyle potentially being recalled from his loan spell at Birmingham City by Wolves.
Sky Sports pundit Don Goodman has admitted he isn’t surprised to see Wolves considering a recall for midfielder Tommy Doyle from Birmingham City given his lack of playing time at St Andrews so far this season.
Blues have made a positive start on their return to the Championship under Chris Davies, taking 21 points from their opening 15 league games and sitting four points outside the play-offs.
The West Midlands outfit have had an upturn in form by winning three out of their last five league matches, but will be hoping to bounce back after tasting defeat at Middlesbrough before the international break.
Birmingham host Norwich City on Saturday afternoon, who will be buoyed by a new regime at Carrow Road in the form of Philippe Clement.
With under two months remaining until the January transfer window opens, rumours are beginning to swirl at every club in the second-tier about who will be coming in and exiting the club.
And in recent days, loanee Tommy Doyle has been touted for a recall by Wolves at the turn of the new year, with new boss Rob Edwards believed to be a big fan of his talents and a player who could play a key part in their Premier League survival bid, as per a report by Wayne Veysey at Football Insider.
This would be a particularly big blow for Davies, who has just begun to integrate Doyle into the starting fold on a regular basis following a slow start to his loan spell in royal blue.
The midfielder has started the last four Championship matches for Birmingham and is beginning to showcase the talents that saw him play a pivotal role in Sheffield United’s promotion push last term.
With this news in mind, Sky Sports pundit Don Goodman has reflected on whether he is surprised by Wolves’ decision and how big of a dent this could be to Chris Davies.

Speaking exclusively to Football League World, Sky Sports pundit Don Goodman has revealed that he can understand why Wolves want to recall Tommy Doyle from his Birmingham City loan given their precarious position in the Premier League, while he is shocked to see his struggle for gametime at St Andrews.
Goodman said: “Yeah, I’ve got to be honest, I’m not surprised Wolves would potentially terminate that.
“Rob Edwards, like me, will remember the last time Tommy Doyle was in the Championship at Sheffield United, and he was a mainstay of their promotion charge, along with James McAtee and some other players obviously, but they were the two loan players.
“I am shocked he hasn’t started more games for Birmingham City, really. I think he’s started the last five looking at this, in which they’ve won three, but he only started two before that, and I’m not sure of the reason why, as he’s such a good technician, such a good footballer, and he’d be right up Chris Davies’ street, but he just didn’t get the opportunities at the start of the season that he would have hoped for.
“With Wolves, they’re in dire straits at the minute, and Rob Edwards will be well aware of what Tommy Doyle can do, and let’s have it right, Wolves need all the help they can get.”

This is a worrying update to read for Birmingham City supporters, who will be fearing that their midfield department will be taking a huge hit if Tommy Doyle was to depart.
It’s far from surprising that Wolves are considering a recall though, given the club invested significantly during the summer transfer window and may be restricted to what they can do during January, so looking closer to home may be the best they can do to bolster the squad and give Rob Edwards the best chance of delivering success at Molineux.
While Birmingham would still be well-stocked with options in the middle of the park even if Doyle departed, he is one of their better options at this level, and the club would definitely be losing some extra dynamism that they desperately need over the course of a Championship season.
Because of this, Blues must shortlist some midfield targets to pursue during the January transfer window, as a Doyle recall could become likelier if Edwards doesn’t have an instant impact as Wolves boss.
