Sky Sports pundit Don Goodman exclusively tells FLW what he thinks Lyndon Dykes should do this summer
Birmingham City striker Lyndon Dykes may be heading towards the exit door this summer following the arrival of prolific Japanese forward Kyogo Furuhashi.
Joining from French side Rennes for a reported £10m, 30-year-old Kyogo netted 86 goals in 167 appearances for Celtic before his brief stint in France.
Kyogo's signature will almost certainly alter the striker hierarchy at St. Andrews - with record-signing Jay Stansfield, Alfie May, and Lyndon Dykes those under contract in B9.
Since joining Blues for £1m in August 2024, Dykes has struggled to make an impact, scoring just one goal in 25 league matches during their 111-point League One title triumph.
Speaking exclusively to FLW about Dykes' prospects at Birmingham City ahead of the new Championship season, Sky Sports pundit Don Goodman believes he can't see the Scottish international getting game time.
"I think you have to go back to 2020/21 to see the last time that Lyndon Dykes managed double figures in the Championship," Goodman told FLW.
"It’s been a tough few years for him, don’t think that he’s going to get a lot of game time at Birmingham City this season in the Championship, don’t really think he’s a prolific scorer of goals.
"I think there’s only once, since he’s been in England, that he’s managed to get double figures - I think that was Queens Park Rangers in his first season there."
The stats support Goodman's assessment of Dykes' struggles in recent years - after achieving his career-best Championship return of 12 goals in 42 appearances during the 20/21 season with QPR, his output has steadily declined.
In his final years at Loftus Road, Dykes managed just eight goals during both the 21/22 and 22/23 campaigns. His 23/24 season was even more disappointing, with only six goals in 31 league games.
Goodman, who was a keen goalscorer throughout his own playing days, thinks Dykes should seriously consider his options. "If I were him, I would absolutely be looking to find an avenue out and find a way to a club that is going to play me week in and week out," Goodman concluded.
Blues' Chairman Tom Wagner has made no secret of the West Midlands outfit's Premier League ambitions, with the American businessman stating that reaching the top-flight "is certainly the goal."
Due to Birmingham targeting automatic promotion, Manager Chris Davies is extremely likely to favour his most reliable scorers whenever possible - which won't even leave Dykes on the periphery.
This summer's recruitment drive, which has also seen the arrivals of big names like Demarai Gray, Tommy Doyle, and Bright Osayi-Samuel, does show that Birmingham do mean business this summer.
At 29, Dykes finds himself at a crucial point in his career. Having represented Scotland over 40 times and scored nine for them - there is maybe some value left in him that could result in a fee. Goodman's advice appears sound wording though. With even more limited opportunities likely at Blues next season, a move to a club where he can secure regular first-team football could be the wise choice.
It remains to be seen what clubs would potentially suit an experienced striker in the Australian-born Dykes, but he does need a chance if he is to ever get back to his debut season numbers at QPR.
