After winning promotion from the EFL Championship through the Play-Offs, Sunderland have gone onto be one of the stories of the season.
Sunday’s derby day victory over Newcastle United was undoubtedly the highlight of the season so far for the Mackems.
The dramatic victory leaves them sitting 8th in the Premier League table with 26 points from their opening 16 games. They also remain unbeaten at the Stadium of Light despite facing the likes of Arsenal, Newcastle, Aston Villa and Everton.
But they’ve also been clinical away from the Stadium of Light, beating the likes of Chelsea and Nottingham Forest.
Former Sunderland midfielder Stefan Schwarz spoke excusively to EPL Index and shared his thoughts on the Black Cats’ season so far…
Schwarz has been left in awe of Sunderland’s performances so far this season, saying: “Sunderland are in dreamland right now. They have started the season so well.”
“I’m really excited for the rest of the season where I am sure there will be a drop off, but I do see Sunderland pushing for a top ten position which will be an incredible achievement.”
They also face two reasonable fixtures in the coming weeks. First, they travel to Brighton before hosting Leeds United on the other side of Christmas. Positive results in those would leave them in a brilliant position heading into the new year.

Whilst all of Sunderland’s squad deserve immense credit for the performances so far this season, Schwarz was keen to point out one player – Granit Xhaka.
The veteran midfielder arrived for £15m in the summer from Bayer Leverkusen and has immediately added incredible standards and performances to Sunderland’s midfield.
“Xhaka is really showing his class as an experienced but talented player,” said Schwarz, “He has really matured since his Arsenal days and is already one of Sunderland’s best ever signings.”
“The level he is playing at is excellent and he lifts others around him, which helps Sunderland perform so well,” continued Schwarz, “He is definitely one of the signings of the season.”
Can Sunderland fans be dreaming of a European spot by the end of the season? Absolutely, and if they are to manage it, Granit Xhaka will be at the epicentre of their success.
