Huddersfield Town defender Brodie Spencer is set to join Oxford United, Football League World has learned
Highly-rated Huddersfield Town defender Brodie Spencer is poised to join Oxford United following the agreement of a deal between the two clubs, sources have exclusively revealed to Football League World.
The Terriers have embarked upon an extremely active start to this summer's transfer window under the stewardship of new head coach Lee Grant after a disappointing 10th-placed finish in the 2024/25 League One campaign.
A rebuild was required at the Accu Stadium and Huddersfield have been busy on all fronts, sanctioning a host of departures while bolstering the squad at Grant's disposal with a series of additions ahead of next season, where they are expected to compete with divisional rivals such as Bolton Wanderers, Cardiff City, Luton Town, Stockport County and Plymouth Argyle for promotion to the Championship.
Huddersfield chose to release nine senior players at the end of their respective contracts following the conclusion of the previous campaign, while also selling Welsh international wide-man Sorba Thomas to Stoke City, and they have not shied away from heading underway with a rebuild of the playing squad by completing eight signings to date.
The League One promotion hopefuls have already acquired defensive duo Joe Low and Sean Roughan, two deals which were first called by FLW last month, with the likes of Owen Goodman, Marcus Harness, Ryan Ledson and Sean Roughan among those to have signed on the dotted line in recent times, too.
As exclusively reported by FLW earlier today, Lynden Gooch is another player potentially set to move to West Yorkshire as Huddersfield continue to hold talks with the versatile defender.
However, a significant departure beckons with Spencer set to join Championship side Oxford.
FLW has been exclusively informed that 21-year-old Spencer is closing in on a switch to the second-tier with Oxford, with a deal having been struck between the two clubs.
The financial details surrounding the deal remain unclear at this moment in time, although Huddersfield activated an option in Spencer's contract to extend his stay until "at least 2026" just last summer and the defender's age means the Terriers surely will not be parting with an insignificant outlay.
Spencer first joined Huddersfield from Northern Irish outfit Cliftonville in September 2020 and has gradually established himself as a first-team regular at Town after impressing for the club's academy.
The right-sided full-back, who can also operate in the centre of defence, featured on 33 occasions for Huddersfield in League One last season, scoring three times, and is poised to leave the side with 62 appearances under his belt overall.
Spencer has also earned 17 caps and counting for Northern Ireland at senior international level, and appeared in both of their friendly fixtures against Denmark and Iceland in June.
It's not the news that Huddersfield supporters would have wanted to hear after such a promising and action-packed transfer window to date, which has ignited real optimism and excitement as to what can be achieved under Grant next season.
That will remain intact in spite of Spencer's impending move to Oxford, of course.
However, his departure does mark something of a blow for Huddersfield, who would have surely envisaged the Northern Irishman continuing to establish himself as a regular fixture in the side heading into next season and beyond.
At 21, Spencer has accumulated a wealth of experience for both club and country over the last two seasons and the signs suggest he's only going to get better, too, and he has been a largel -popular figure among the Town faithful.
The silver lining, though, is that Huddersfield have already undertaken impressive work in bolstering their backline, which should be among the meanest in League One next season with the arrivals of Low, Roughan, Whatmough, Murray Wallace and Josh Feeney on loan from Aston Villa.
