Ben Wiles could be set for a surprise Terriers exit this month

MK Dons are plotting another ambitious raid of a team higher up the EFL pyramid, with Huddersfield Town midfielder Ben Wiles on their radar, Football League World can exclusively reveal.

The Buckinghamshire outfit, backed by the finance of Kuwaiti owner Fahad Al-Ghanim, were one of the pre-season favourites to bag one of the three League Two automatic promotion spots on offer, but they currently sit in fifth position - two points adrift of Walsall in third.

Despite a number of big names within Paul Warne's squad, the Dons head coach is looking for some extra strength in depth heading into the final few months of the 2025-26 season, and he's looking to re-unite with a familiar face to give him some more energy and guile in the middle of the park.

FLW understands that MK Dons are in talks with League One outfit Huddersfield Town in a bid to land Ben Wiles, although it's unclear as to whether it would be a loan deal or a permanent switch to Stadium MK.

The 26-year-old is no stranger to the management of Warne, having spent considerable time under his wing when coming through the ranks at Rotherham United as a youngster.

It was Warne who handed Wiles his senior debut in October 2017, and he would go on to make 193 appearances in all competitions for the Millers, until he was sold to Yorkshire rivals Huddersfield in what was reported to be a 'seven-figure' fee.

Wiles made 32 Championship appearances for the Terriers in his debut season, in what proved to be a struggle for both his new and old club, as they were both relegated into League One, but he found his form for Town in the third tier, with eight goals and five assists in 2024-25.

And despite being a regular starter under new manager Lee Grant for the first few months of the current campaign, Wiles has found himself out of the starting 11 in recent weeks and restricted to substitute cameos, which could pave the way for a January exit.

Huddersfield have the option to extend Wiles' contract by a further year, with his current deal set to expire at the end of the season, but MK Dons' money could prove tempting, having signed the likes of Aaron Collins and Kane Wilson from Bolton Wanderers and Derby County respectively over the summer.

Warne recently lost midfield goal threat Alex Gilbey to injury, although he is expected back sooner rather than later, but another engine room operator in Will Collar is out until March with a hamstring problem - Wiles could potentially fill that void if a deal can be struck between all parties.
