Time is of the essence to fill the vacant dugout, according to the Sky Sports pundit

With Huddersfield Town’s search for a new permanent manager gathering pace, the club have reportedly identified St Mirren’s Stephen Robinson as their top target.

The Northern Irishman has impressed north of the border, guiding the Paisley club to three consecutive top-six finishes and a historic return to European football.

Now, as the Terriers look to reset after a turbulent season in League One, Robinson’s name is rising up the shortlist according to a report from Alan Nixon's Patreon.

Following Robinson’s links to the vacant post in West Yorkshire, Football League World spoke exclusively with Lee Hendrie on whether the St Mirren boss could be a good appointment for Huddersfield Town, or represented more of a gamble.

Lee Hendrie: Even if Robinson is a gamble, Huddersfield Town must act fast

Huddersfield Town are obviously are looking for a new manager, head coach and Stephen Robinson from St Mirren has been on their radar, as a few other clubs by all accounts.” Hendrie told FLW. “They’ve had a top half finish and a decent season, he would have been a good solution.”

“We’re getting to that sort of time of the year where, we're at the end of the season now, there has to be someone who has to come and fill that void, so they can put their own stamp on things, bring their own players in. Huddersfield have lost a hell of a lot of players, so there has to be that solution, it has to be resolved pretty quick I feel.

“When you’re looking at managers who can come and take that role on, I think you’re always looking at a bit of a gamble unless you go for someone who knows the league relatively well and wants to play a certain style of football, which Robinson likes to do.

“So, maybe it is the perfect fit - I think you’re looking at Huddersfield last season and they just didn’t hit anywhere the heights they should have done after being relegated, so I think it’s highly important that if he’s linked and if he’s on the radar, that you make the big call and get someone in as soon as possible.

“And maybe he is the right fit, it’s always a gamble I think when managers come down from Scotland, they haven’t had as many successful managers, because it’s a hell of a different league, and you need to know leagues - League One is a tough one at that.

“Do you put the Scottish league at times in comparison with the lower Championship and League One, possibly, so I think that’s why they’ve looked at him and felt that he could be a good solution for them.”

Robinson may not be the most glamorous name linked with the Huddersfield job, but his credentials at St Mirren are difficult to overlook. As Lee Hendrie points out, every appointment carries a degree of risk - particularly when stepping into the unpredictability of League One - but at this point, the Terriers can’t afford to sit still.

After relegation and a limp end to the season, the club is at a turning point. The managerial churn of recent years has created instability, with no clear identity or long-term vision on the pitch.

Whoever is appointed this summer must be backed with more than just budget - they need time, trust, and the opportunity to build something sustainable.

Robinson has experience in English football, knows how to get the best out of limited resources, and could bring a much-needed reset to a disjointed squad.

With Cardiff and QPR also reportedly circling, the Terriers must act quickly if they believe he’s the right man.

The risk is real, but so is the cost of another wasted season. Huddersfield
