The Chairboys took a big hit from their promotion rivals on Monday.

Wycombe Wanderers must quickly forget the horror show that was their 4-0 loss to Charlton Athletic in order to get back on track for automatic promotion, said their former captain Joe Jacobson.

Wycombe were hit by a hefty blow on Easter Monday when they were battered by promotion rivals Charlton Athletic. Not only did the loss bring Nathan Jones' side well into contention for second place in League One, it made the Chairboys' chances of catching the current holders of that position, Wrexham, even slimmer.

Heading into the second round of matches over the Easter weekend, Wycombe were the ones in command. They controlled their own destiny thanks to a strong win over Bolton Wanderers on the Friday, while Wrexham dropped points against Bristol Rovers.

Now their lead is gone, and they have it all to do in the last two matches versus Leyton Orient (A) and Stockport County (H); two very tough teams.

Wycombe must forget heavy Charlton defeat quickly

Jacobson, who won promotion from League One with Wanderers as their captain in the 2019/20 season, believes that Wycombe can turn things around after their battering against Charlton.

In an exclusive interview with Football League World, he said: "It was a tough loss for Wycombe on the weekend. I feel like you can lose matches, but when it's 4-0 it can hold a bit more weight. If it was a 1-0, people would have just breezed past it, but because it was 4-0 people will look into it a little bit more.

"But they have been in great form, they just have to look at it as a one-off result. The positive is that Charlton now have to go to Wrexham, so they are capable of pulling off another result there.

"Wycombe just have to look at winning the next game, and, because they're in the early kick-off, if they win, then there's pressure on Wrexham to win against Charlton, which will be very, very difficult, so it could put them back in a strong position come Saturday.

"At this stage of the season it changes very quickly. Hopefully they can just put it to bed, get over it - it's just one defeat, don't dwell on it - and move onto the next game."

Wycombe might just have lost their shot at a top-two finish

If the Wanderers do manage to finish ahead of Wrexham, Charlton and Stockport, they will have done so via a route that was tinged with danger. The Addicks, Orient and the Hatters are three of the four most in-form teams in League One. Navigating that minefield with all the pressure of promotion on them would deserve huge credit.

But there is a fear that this may be just a step too far for them. Of course, had you offered this season to any of the Wycombe supporters before the start of the season, they would have snapped your hand off. But now that they have had that experience and feel like they are so close, it will be so bitter if they miss out on the top two.
