Lee Hendrie doesn't believe the Blues' record will be matched
Birmingham City left the world of football in shock this season, after tallying up 111 League One points, a total that smashed the previous EFL record of 106 which was held by Reading.
The Blues were determined to reclaim their second-tier status after suffering relegation from the Championship in 2024, which they achieved in fine style.
Birmingham flexed their financial muscles under Tom Wagner to great effect last summer, as expensive deals were struck for the likes of Willum Willumsson, Christoph Klarer, Tomoki Iwata and Jay Stansfield to hand Chris Davies a star-studded, record-breaking League One squad, which he subsequently used to dominate proceedings.
Although the attention has now turned to how well the Blues will fare in the Championship next term, with play-off chances even touted by some, the achievement Birmingham have pulled off can’t be quickly forgotten.
Such domination has been absent from the modern game, which makes the campaign of Davies and co.all the more impressive.
Speaking exclusively to Football League World, Sky Sports pundit and former Aston Villa player Lee Hendrie was quick to commend
Birmingham for their record and believes it will be extremely trying for others to match.
“Birmingham's points tally this season has been phenomenal,” stated Hendrie. “111. How long do I think it'll be before someone can challenge that? I mean, that's going to be a real big ask.
“The reason I say that is the style and the way that Birmingham went about winning League One was quite phenomenal. It really was. They were the big team in the league.
“No one really got near them, even at times when they didn't play particularly well, they had a way of winning games. Sometimes it wasn't pretty, but they did it in style.
“I just don't think anyone can get close to even matching that. Unless there's going to be a big investor that comes into one of those clubs that have been relegated, and they invest heavily in the team.
“I think Birmingham did it right, they recruited well and they got the right players in that were going to be suitable for the team and the league.
“I don't think that'll get beaten for quite some time.”
Birmingham are a club that are going places. Backed by an ambitious owner, the Blues’ upwards trajectory looks almost unstoppable, and it wouldn’t be unfathomable to see the team fighting for a place in the Premier League next year.
Owner Tom Wagner wants to turn the club into one of English football’s prized possessions, having revealed plans to introduce the ' Sports Quarter’ - a brand-new development in the east of the city which will encompass a new 60,000-seater stadium, training ground and academy facility, plus entertainment, office, residential and retail spaces.
The project, which is estimated to cost £2-3 billion, highlights the club’s ambition to become a top-level footballing commodity.
The start of that journey has been incredibly successful, with the Blues dominating League One in what has proven to be a real statement of intent.
Birmingham had pressure heaped upon them before the beginning of the campaign, due to their heavy spending, but Chris Davies’ side coped brilliantly and silenced the doubters.
Although attention has now turned to their return to the Championship, the supporters at St. Andrew's will never forget their club’s record-breaking League One gambit.
