Pompey are now in the driving seat to land forward Jacob Brown on deadline day.
Football League World has exclusively learned that Portsmouth have leapfrogged Barnsley in the race to sign Luton Town's Jacob Brown, and are in advanced talks to land the forward ahead of the 7pm deadline.
Football League World had previously revealed this morning that the Tykes had been in discussions to lure the 27-year-old over to Oakwell, but the emerging interest from Pompey and a return to the Championship has put the South Coast outfit at the front of the queue to secure his signature.
Brown, who joined Luton Town from Stoke City ahead of the Hatters' maiden Premier League campaign in 2024, has endured a difficult stay in Bedfordshire by scoring just seven goals in 60 games, and is looking to put a nightmare period of his career behind him.
Brown missed the start of the season with a knee injury and has struggled to establish himself back in the first-team setup at Kenilworth Road since returning to full fitness in November.
Meanwhile for Portsmouth, they could well be bolstering their forward department heading into a crucial remainder of the Championship campaign, as they look to propel themselves away from the dreaded relegation dropzone.

Football League World can exclusively reveal that second-tier outfit Portsmouth are leading the race to sign Luton Town forward Jacob Brown ahead of tonight's 7pm deadline.
A previous exclusive from Football League World emerged this morning, detailing that Barnsley were in discussions to bring the ex-Tykes man to Oakwell, but Portsmouth now look set to seal the deal and offer the 27-year-old a route back into Championship football.
Pompey are believed to be in advanced talks with Brown over a deal, which would bring an end to his nightmare stint at Luton Town.
A mix of injury troubles and inability to get back into the first-team setup has contributed to Hatters boss Jack Wilshere wanting to part ways with the forward, and Brown will be hopeful he can help contribute to the South Coast outfit surviving a second straight season in the second-tier.
There will be some question marks over his fitness and ability to slot into the first-team setup immediately, given he hasn't played a lot of games in recent times, but the frontman possesses a pedigree of netting regularly in the Championship, notably scoring 13 times for Stoke City back in the 2021-22 campaign.
It also bolsters the ranks in the forward department, with Colby Bishop now having to take less of the workload as Championship games continue to arrive thick and fast.
