Robert Sanchez doesn’t want to compete to be Chelsea’s number one this season, according to an exclusive report.

News came out from top sources like Nizaar Kinsella at the BBC yesterday that Chelsea’s backup goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen had asked to leave the club.

That makes sense – after two years of not playing much, it’s time for him to move on and try something elsewhere. We all then assumed that Robert Sanchez would be staying as number one, with young Mike Penders brought back from Strasbourg to compete with him.

Sanchez fed up of competing to be first choice

But a report from our writer Simon Phillips today makes it clear that it might not be that simple. He says that Sanchez “wants to be number one” and doesn’t want to compete with Penders.

“If [Sanchez] loses his number one spot, he will become unhappy very fast. Sources also believe that Penders coming in and not being number one will be detrimental to his development so far, and there are real concerns around this,” our writer concludes.

Phillips does make it clear that Penders might not be coming back this year anyway, making all this moot.

But it does seem that Chelsea have a lot of big decisions to make in goal this summer.

In other news…

Valentin Barco’s eye opening stats must have some Chelsea attackers very excited for next season already.

Teddy Sharman-Lowe was having a great season with Bolton until Chelsea recalled him – we’d imagine he wants a permanent move this summer.
