Our writer Simon Phillips has just dropped a very important exclusive update on the thing that will have been worrying Chelsea fans through the last week – Cole Palmer’s fitness.
The attacker was left out of our squad to face Arsenal last weekend after picking up an injury, with no warning beforehand. Manager Enzo Maresca said after the game it was a “muscular problem” but didn’t give much more detail than that.
Gradually over the last week we’ve heard more and more about the issue, with Phillips leading the reporting. We know that Palmer had a scan on Monday on his hamstring, and then a follow up on his back, which was getting some “referred pain” from the hamstrings.
According to the latest report, it’s an all clear:
“Cole Palmer had his second scan on his back and it’s showing nothing serious. Cole is now in Dubai for recovery with a specialist but again, it’s nothing major. Hopefully this means he will be OK for Spurs,” Phillips wrote on his Substack.

It never seemed too serious, and Maresca was playing it down the whole time. But you just never know, especially with back injuries.
Palmer has withdrawn from England duty, and with an FA Cup weekend to follow this international break, he will have had an exceptionally long break of 3 weeks to enjoy between his last game and this one.
Let’s hope that extra rest helps him get right mentally as well as physically. We need him back to scoring and assisting if we’re to break out of the funk we’ve been in since Christmas. This season can still end in a really positive way – but we will need Cole firing and smiling once again.
