Crystal Palace have had a good relationship with Chelsea in terms of transfers through the last few years, and there is now contact between the two clubs over a new player.

Mike McGrath of the Daily Telegraph is today exclusively reporting that Palace has enquired about rising star Josh Acheampong, hoping to take him on loan this season.

The 19 year old rose to prominence in the Conference League last season after signing a new contract at the turn of the year. He’s been a useful squad player for Enzo Maresca, but the Club World Cup has shown he’s still considered behind Reece James and Malo Gusto in the pecking order at right back, his preferred position.

Why Palace are so keen on another rising star from Cobham

Josh Acheampong gets instructions from Enzo Maresca.

McGrath’s piece says that Palace have targeted Acheampong as their primary signing from Chelsea this summer, following the likes of Trevoh Chalobah and Ben Chilwell who made the switch on  loan last season. Acheampong’s talent and versatility makes him the “perfect loan to bolster Oliver Glasner’s back line.”

His ability to play either in central defence or at full back is seen as another bonus.

Chelsea can’t afford to let talent leave even on positive loan

We would love Acheampong to go and get some game time on loan in the Premier League, but Chelsea’s demanding upcoming season means that he shouldn’t be allowed to go this summer. Reece James’ injury record means he can’t be relied upon, and Malo Gusto has struggled for form for a year now.

We’re just one injury away from Acheampong being really in the picture, and there are so many games to go around in the year to come.
