Sheffield United have lost their first four league games

Ruben Selles has suffered a nightmare start to life as Sheffield United manager.

The Spaniard took over at Bramall Lane following Chris Wilder’s dismissal, a move questioned by many due to his mediocre spell at Hull City, which narrowly saw the Tigers avoid relegation at the end of last term, and of course Wilder's success in finishing third last season.

United have lost their first four Championship fixtures and sit bottom of the table, with a repeat of last season’s promotion push already looking unrealistic.

Besides the results, performances on the pitch also haven't looked up to scratch, with it unclear as to exactly what the Steel City side's new boss is looking to deploy. Scoring just once in four league games is a serious cause for concern, especially when operators such as Tyrese Campbell, Tom Cannon and Danny Ings make up the Blades' striking department.

Despite the poor start, Selles has been continuously backed in the transfer market, which puts even more pressure on his shoulders to perform.

Speaking exclusively to Football League World, Sky Sports pundit and former Aston Villa midfielder, Lee Hendrie, believes that the 42-year-old has a tough task ahead of him this season.

Lee Hendrie weighs in on Ruben Selles amid nightmare Sheffield United start

“I think that the pressure's always been on Selles to be quite honest,” stated Hendrie, “ever since he's come into the football club.

“He wants to do his own thing and play his own style, which is why you bring different managers in. They’ve got different ideas and that's what's happened here.

“So, there was always going to be big pressure in the fact that he hasn't really jumped out when he's been at Reading and Hull. It's just been his style and his methods that have obviously drawn people’s attention to him.

“I always thought that him going in at Sheffield United was going to be one that you'd certainly keep tabs on. Because, as I said, you bring someone in who has got that success and that winning theory of promotions. Someone who has been winning stuff.

“You start to think you can see where the method is here, but I've always thought that this was going to be a hard job for him.

“Going into a club where the expectation levels are massive, the board have backed him and hopefully it does work.”

Sheffield United and Ruben Selles will hope new recruits can perform immediately

Selles has been backed in the transfer market and now must translate that to performances on the pitch.

The Blades have made 14 new additions, including the likes of Tahith Chong, Japhet Tanganga and Danny Ings, which means that fighting for promotion should be the ultimate aim once again.

Those involved at Sheffield United who made the decision to appoint Selles will also be hoping that their new manager can make things click sooner rather than later; otherwise they face the reality that the decision they made to dismiss Wilder may not have been correct.

After the international break, the Steel City side face Charlton Athletic and Oxford United after a trip to Ipswich Town. If wins still aren't on the board following that run of games, serious questions may start being asked about the 42-year-old's job security.

Not fighting for promotion could be dealt with by the Blades' supporters, but flirting with relegation is a scenario that simply can't come to life following the money they have spent and the success the club have enjoyed in recent years.

Although competition is stiff in the Championship, the Spaniard certainly doesn’t possess a squad that should be in a relegation scrap.

Selles must turn around his side’s performances sooner rather than later, or there will be a whole host of managers eager to take over his role and guide a squad of extremely talented operators back up the table.
