The Luton Town forward has been tipped to succeed next term
Luton Town are preparing for life back in League One after their shock relegation from the Championship last term.
The Hatters have been on an intense rollercoaster ride the past few seasons, securing promotion to the Premier League before falling down two divisions in consecutive years.
As Matt Bloomfield’s side look to reclaim their place in the second-tier, they have added firepower to their frontline in the form of Nahki Wells.
The 35-year-old scored 10 times and provided four assists for Bristol City in the Championship last term, highlighting the goalscoring ability he still possesses.
Speaking exclusively to Football League World, Sky Sports pundit and former Aston Villa midfielder, Lee Hendrie, believes that Wells could be one of League One’s leading marksmen next season.
“I think goals this season will be the main thing for Nahki Wells,” stated Hendrie. “The thing is with him is that I think he'll play week in, week out.
“He proved how important he was for Bristol City last season. I thought they might have actually given him another year.
“But dropping down to League One, it's not always easy when you're going down a division by any stretch, but I think Luton will be strong this season.
“I think they'll show that they've got guaranteed quality in behind Wells to give him service and I think they'll play to his strengths.
“He's got the potential to be one of the top scorers in League One this season if he keeps himself fit and he finds himself playing consistently.”
Last season showed that despite reaching the twilight of his career, Wells is still capable of recording double figures in the Championship.
Dropping down a division perhaps offers the striker a chance to increase his longevity even further, with the third-tier a less challenging task.
Although attributes such as pace and physicality dwindle naturally with age, goalscoring instincts and positional awareness remain, which served the 35-year-old well last term.
One thing Bloomfield and Co. must do is manage Wells’ minutes though, if they want to get the best out of the forward.
The Bermudan may prove to be Luton’s best attacking threat, but the Hatters must resist the temptation to rely solely on his expertise.
If they begin to overplay the former Bristol City man, it will bring a serious injury risk that may leave Wells on the sidelines for various periods of the campaign.
However, if Bloomfield can manage him correctly, the goalscorer could be an extremely valuable asset for Luton Town next term.
