The Foxes will return to the Championship next season, having been relegated from the Premier League in their first season back in the top flight.

Current manager Ruud van Nistelrooy's future remains undecided, with constant links to other candidates potentially succeeding the Dutchman ahead of next season.

Reports from Football Insider suggested that Leicester were in advanced talks to appoint former Southampton boss Martin, but Sky Sports then reported that the Foxes wouldn't enter talks with another candidate until their current manager's future is decided.

The former Premier League champions could also have a points deduction to worry about next season, having breached PSR rules in their 2023-24 title-winning Championship season.

This could cause any incoming manager a real headache heading into the job.

Football League World spoke exclusively to former Sunderland striker turned Sky Sports pundit Goodman, and asked him what he thought about Martin's potential appointment at the King Power Stadium.

“I think the Leicester City job is a decent opportunity for somebody," the 59-year-old told FLW.

“In Russell’s case that a high-end Championship club or a club abroad would probably be the opportunity that came his way.

“With regard to Leicester, it’s a case of where are they at in terms of financial stability? Where are they at in terms of a possible points deduction?

“If you’re Russell Martin, I’m pretty sure that you’ll want to be at a club that you feel can get you back to the Premier League.

“There’s lots of grey areas in terms of Leicester City’s predicament at the moment, but it’ll certainly be a big club in the Championship next season.”

It remains unclear what the extent of any punishment could be for Leicester's breaching of PSR rules. However, it will likely take effect next season, thanks to the Premier League's 12-week fast-track process.

Depending on the severity of the punishment, the Foxes could face a tougher year than would've been hoped in the second tier.

Whilst promotion wouldn't be out of the question even if the Leicestershire outfit did receive a points deduction, playing catch-up with the rest of the Championship might be an off-putting factor for some potential managerial candidates.

Martin has plenty of experience in the second tier, but longevity hasn't exactly been a theme of his managerial career so far, with no stint at a single club lasting longer than two years.

With that in mind, the former Scotland international will want to ensure his next move is the right one.

The expectation at Leicester will likely be a promotion challenge, regardless of the points penalty that the Foxes will have to potentially endure. Last time Martin was in the Championship, he did ultimately achieve promotion, but had some tough runs of defeats along the way.

Following a bitterly disappointing return to the Premier League with Southampton which saw him sacked, the former Swansea City boss will be keen to regain his confidence in management, but Leicester might not be the right environment for that right now.
