Huddersfield Town reportedly offered David Wagner the chance to return to the club earlier this month.

Huddersfield Town are searching for a new permanent head coach as they prepare for the 2025/26 League One season.

The Terriers failed to mount a successful promotion push in the third tier following their relegation from the Championship last term, finishing 14 points adrift of the play-off places in tenth position.

Michael Duff was relieved of his duties in March with the club just outside the top six, before interim boss Jon Worthington oversaw two wins and eight defeats during his ten games in charge to see out the season.

Therefore, it is no surprise that the club is now in search of a new permanent head coach ahead of next season, with promotion back to the Championship no doubt the objective for the 2025/26 campaign.

David Wagner was reportedly offered the chance to return to the John Smith's Stadium earlier this month, as per journalist Alex Crook via his X account, and while nothing has yet materialised, with other names in the frame, the German would surely be worth serious consideration given his previous success at the club.

Lee Hendrie urges Huddersfield to pursue Wagner

Sky Sports pundit, Lee Hendrie, spoke exclusively to Football League World about Huddersfield's reported interest in Wagner, stating that the German could be the right man to get the club out of League One.

"Should Huddersfield Town do all they can to appoint David Wagner? Well, he knows the football club well, doesn't he?" Hendrie said.

"He has been back in the English game again quite recently. He has got the clout behind him, he knows the football club well, and I think it might need someone like that just to inject the energy back into that football club. I really do.

"It needs something like that to give it a kick and give it a nudge forward, and I think appointing him might be the right call. Will they be able to get him? That is the big question.

"I think that when you are in League One it is a big ask to get managers to drop down to that level, but obviously it ticks a lot of boxes for him. He knows what the football club is all about, so he could go back there and reignite their success."

Wagner would be a shrewd appointment for Huddersfield

Given that a couple of weeks have passed since it was reported that Huddersfield had offered Wagner the chance to return to the club, it seems to be growing increasingly unlikely that a deal will be completed.

However, the German is undoubtedly passionate about the club, so until another appointment is made, a reunion cannot be completely ruled out.

The 53-year-old won promotion to the Premier League with the Terriers in 2017, and achieved a top-six finish in the Championship with Norwich City during the 2023/24 season, so he would certainly be a shrewd appointment for Huddersfield in League One.

The Yorkshire Post reported a few days ago that former Reading and Hull City boss Ruben Selles had been made the favourite to be installed in the dugout at the John Smith's Stadium, so a return for Wagner may not happen this summer, despite the fact that it surely would have brought back some excitement in West Yorkshire.
