Noel Whelan insists that having two Premiership games postponed could have a “massive” impact as Celtic push for a 10th successive league title.

The former Aberdeen and Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, believes that the fixture build-up is going to pile the pressure on Neil Lennon’s men over the coming weeks.

Celtic confirmed on Tuesday that their league games against St Mirren and Aberdeen had both been postponed after defender Boli Bolingoli breached quarantine rules.

As a result, the Hoops’ next game will be their European knock-out qualifier with KR Reykjavik on Tuesday next week.

The Hoops could also find themselves 11 points behind Rangers in the Premiership if Steven Gerrard’s side continue their perfect start to the season.

Whelan admits the postponed games could have a big impact on Celtic in their title chase and believes there will be serious pressure building at Parkhead.

Whelan told Football Insider: “He’s got European games, he’s got international players there as well.

“It’s massive because the pressure is already on, you look at the table, you look at the points, you’ve got to play catch up.

“Even if you win all those games and so do Rangers, they’re still two points behind. It does pile a lot of pressure on the club and the games they have to play.

“They’ve got the play-offs for the Champions League they’ve got to go through and all these games are going to end up getting tied into one.

“The players could end up getting fatigued very, very quickly, with so many games to play in a short space of time, plus the mental side of it thinking you’re that many points behind already.

“Yes, you’ve got the games in hand but I’ve always said I’d rather have the points in the bag than have games to play.”
