If Exeter City have a sell-on clause in Millenic Alli's deal with Luton Town, they could be in for a large cash windfall if Leicester City swoop.
Exeter City could be the big benefactors in a potential sale of Millenic Alli, as Leicester City, Sheffield United, and Middlesbrough all chase the Luton Town star's signature.
Another example of Exeter's excellence in the transfer market in recent years, Alli arrived from FC Halifax Town in January 2024, and immediately impressed in the second half of the season.
He would spend just a year in Devon though, as he was snapped up by then Championship side Luton for a fee reported to be worth £1.5m.
No sell-on clause was mentioned in the deal, but if Exeter's recent business is anything to go by, there could well be one in place.
Despite a strong start to life at Kenilworth Road for the Irishman, his contributions were unable to prevent the Hatters from succumbing to relegation.
However, his performances have reportedly sparked Championship interest from the likes of Leicester. With that in mind, his former club could be hopeful of a large cash windfall if Alli leaves Luton.
Following an unsuccessful pursuit of Wycombe Wanderers striker Richard Kone in January, Luton turned their attention to Exeter's Alli, bringing him to Bedfordshire for a reported £1.5m.
Whilst Matt Bloomfield's side were ultimately relegated, the new signing was a bright spark in what was an extremely gloomy season for the former Premier League outfit. In 16 appearances, Alli chipped in with four goals, including a winner against Derby County which could've been crucial in the survival race.
Now back in League One, Championship powerhouses such as Leicester, Sheffield United, and Middlesbrough are reportedly interested in signing the former Exeter star. Having only been at Luton for six months, losing Alli would be a disappointing blow.
On the contrary, Gary Caldwell's side, who gave the Irishman his first break in the EFL, might be hopeful that the Hatters will sell the winger, as they could be in for a tasty payday if they have any invested interest in their former player.
Exeter are the epitome of how a fan-owned club should be run. We've seen many times the Grecians either buy a player for cheap and sell them on for a large profit, or have academy graduates go on to be sold for eye-watering amounts of money.
Alli is the latest player to follow this trend, with the Devon-based side already pocketing a big profit from the initial sale, and they could be in for a further helping of cash, as they could hold a sell-on clause from the deal with the Hatters.
The fee that any interested parties would have to pay Luton to sign the 25-year-old is currently unknown, but it's fair to assume that it would be substantially larger than the £1.5m the Bedfordshire side paid for his services six months ago.
If Alli is sold to Leicester or another one of the interested clubs, this coul be a welcome boost for Exeter, who are currently going through somewhat of a transitional period, with plenty of departures already this summer.
Caldwell has strengthened his side already, but the competitive nature of League One will see him wanting to add plenty more bodies to the squad, and any cash windfall from any sell-on clause would certainly go a long way towards that.
The Grecians have always been a club that relies on sales in order to strengthen, so they will be hopeful that an extra cash windfall will be coming their way this summer.
