DR Congo leads the pack, alongside Morocco, in the ranking of the most decorated national teams in the African Nations Championship (CHAN) with two titles to their name.

To discuss the "Leopards'" chances in the new edition of the continental tournament, Foot Africa sought the insight of Congolese journalist Alan Basila, who had this to say.

DR Congo has always shown extra spirit and exceptional character when approaching a continental competition. Nothing foretells either failure or a stunning success. As the matches unfold, you sense a team taking shape, growing confident enough to aim high—even if it wasn’t obvious at the start. That was the case in Ghana in 2009 and Rwanda in 2016. This is a side that naturally rises to the occasion, especially when it’s flying under the radar. In short, this is a team capable of anything.Several young stars are worth keeping an eye on. They’ll have the chance to prove all the good things people say about them after performing at a high level with their clubs:- Oscar Kabwit, a young striker for TPM, top scorer of his club’s season and one of the few home-based players recently called up to Desabre’s senior squad.- Lise Nyembo Ntumba from FC SAINT-ELOI LUPOPO, who may soon be snapped up by TPM. A dynamic and decisive winger, this CHAN is a proving ground for him.- Tony Talasi and Ibrahim Matobo, fresh from competing at the U20 AFCON, arrive with added maturity.- Jean-Benoît Tukumbane Banga, a young talent from FC TANGANYIKA, one of this season’s breakout stars.- Also worth mentioning is Aimé Bakula, likely one of the oldest players at this CHAN. With extensive experience and a key role as TPM’s number two during their golden years from 2009 to 2014, he’ll be making his first appearances for the national team and debuting in a continental competition.

DR Congo targets a third CHAN crown

DR Congo won the inaugural edition of the African Nations Championship (CHAN), held in Côte d’Ivoire, by defeating Ghana 2-0 in the final.

They repeated the feat in the 2016 edition, hosted by Rwanda, clinching the trophy with a commanding 3-0 victory over Mali in the final.
