José Martínez has suffered a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, a far more serious setback than first feared. According to Meu Timao, club tests confirmed the injury after the midfielder reported pain on his return.

An ACL rupture is among football’s most severe injuries and could keep him out for months, possibly until the end of the season. Sports physiotherapist Luanda Azevedo, a Sonafe Brasil specialist, said recovery hinges on surgical success and multiple physical benchmarks.

She noted the injury undermines knee stability for sharp changes of direction, acceleration, deceleration and contact. Modern rehabilitation aims to restore strength, neuromuscular control, confidence and limb symmetry, and rushing phases can raise the risk of recurrence.

Martínez did not report with team-mates on the third of January, citing Venezuelan passport issues amid the country’s political crisis. A new document was requested on 13 January and issued only last Friday, when he returned to Brazil.

During his absence Corinthians sent him an individual programme, though the club could not verify adherence. The player had shared videos early January of his workouts, including ball work.

The delay frustrated the football department and coach Dorival Júnior, who struggled to reach him and flagged a shortage of defensive midfielders. After the match against Palmeiras on Sunday, the coach said Martínez had reported knee pain and would undergo scans on Monday to assess the extent.

Amid Martínez’s injury, Corinthians have moved for Allan, aged 28, from Flamengo on a season-long loan with no fee. The club will pay his wages and hold an option to buy at the end of the deal.
