Sunderland were adamant they should have been awarded a second-half penalty for handball during their 5-3 defeat at Manchester City.

According to Sunderland Echo, VAR reviewed an apparent handball by Elliot Anderson but upheld referee Rob Jones’s decision, judging the action accidental rather than deliberate.

The incident came as Anderson challenged Enzo Le Fée in the area, the ball hitting one arm then his hand before moving away from the Sunderland midfielder. Jones waved play on.

Moments later City went up the pitch and scored, with Antoine Semenyo finishing from a deflected clearance for his second of the game to make it 4-2. Brian Brobbey quickly replied to complete his hat-trick, but the gap proved too big to close.

Head coach Regis Le Bris said he felt his side should have had a penalty. “It’s hard to say, it looks like a handball to me,” he said. “I don’t know [why it’s not given]. They don’t explain, they just say yes or no.”
