Dominic Calvert-Lewin has been released from England duty and returned to Leeds United as the squad is reduced, curtailing his chance to press his World Cup claims this window.
The 29-year-old played 36 minutes in Friday’s 1-1 draw with Uruguay after replacing Dominic Solanke, performing solidly but heading one presentable chance off target. The FA said in a statement that a revised 27-man squad is preparing for Japan, with eight players, including Aaron Ramsdale, Fikayo Tomori and Calvert-Lewin, due to leave.
Head coach Thomas Tuchel named a 35-man group for this camp, explaining that rotation and rest would shape selections. Calvert-Lewin, rather than Solanke, has been stood down ahead of Tuesday’s Japan game at Wembley.
John Stones has returned to Manchester City for assessment after a training issue before the Uruguay match, while Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton and Arsenal’s Noni Madueke have gone back with knocks.
Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka will also return to Arsenal for medical assessment after arriving on Friday with nine others, namely Dean Henderson, Nico O’Reilly, Ezri Konsa, Marc Guéhi, Dan Burn, Elliot Anderson, Morgan Rogers, Anthony Gordon and Harry Kane.
With no further involvement this week, Calvert-Lewin now turns back to Leeds, where a strong finish could yet aid his World Cup push.
