The draw for the FA Cup quarter finals took place last night, awkwardly placed during three of the matches from the fifth round.
With Storm Dennis wreaking havoc across the bulk of the fifth-round matches, only two of the last eight were confirmed when the balls were drawn, with three more teams advancing last night and three more matches still to come. Leicester City will face Reading on Thursday as Arsenal host Lewes on Sunday and Crystal Palace play their rescheduled match against Brighton next Tuesday.
The two matches not hit by the weather over the weekend were as different as they could be with third-tier Sunderland holding WSL strugglers Birmingham City until the last ten minutes – Lucy Staniforth’s free kick dropping through Claudia Moan’s gloves; a rare error from the goalkeeper who had earned her corn during the tie. Whilst in Manchester, fourth-tier Ipswich Town were unceremoniously knocked out of the cup as holders, Manchester City hit them for ten with hat tricks from Pauline Bremer, Jess Park and Georgia Stanway after Laura Coombs had opened the scoring.
On Monday night, Chelsea narrowly defeated Liverpool courtesy of a thunderous Guro Reiten volley. Elsewhere, Coventry United could do little to stop Spurs as Riana Dean fired in her own hat trick following goals from Siri Worm and Lucia Leon. And at Ashton Gate, Bristol City were left humbled as Everton came, saw and conquered having hit the Robins for five with goals from Lucy Graham, Esme Morgan, Inessa Kaagman and Hannah Cain.
