Championship recruitment has been squeezed after the FA limited Elite Significant Contribution signings to younger players for 2026/27.

The ESC route lets clubs sign overseas players who fall short of a full Governing Body Endorsement. From 15 June, only those born on or after 1 January 2003 are eligible, with a one-day transition.

Clubs can no longer use an ESC allocation on overseas targets aged 24 or over unless they meet the full GBE threshold. The EFL fought off an initial plan to halve allocations to two, so the Championship still has four.

"The FA have changed the squad rules regarding ESC slots, which has made things a lot more difficult - and actually a lot more costly," said Portsmouth manager John Mousinho. The quotes were carried by The Portsmouth News, which also reported he believes the change has wiped as many as 50 names from their shortlist.

The shift could shape plans at Cardiff City, Swansea City and Wrexham as they prepare for 2026/27. They keep four ESC places, but any overseas player aged 24 or above must qualify for a full GBE.
