Brighton set to welcome back a key player for visit of Gunners

Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler has confirmed Yasin Ayari is in contention to return from injury against Arsenal.

A shoulder problem sustained in the 1-1 draw against Everton at the end of January has forced Ayari to sit out Brighton’s last four Premier League games and the FA Cup fourth round defeat to Liverpool.

In his absence, the Seagulls have won just twice in all competitions but have eased fears over being dragged into a relegation battle as they now sit 12 points above the drop zone after back-to-back wins over Brentford and Nottingham Forest.

Brighton welcome Arsenal to the Amex Stadium on Wednesday evening in the Premier League, seeking to dent the Gunners’ hopes of a first title in 22 years.

Hopes of a first win over Arsenal since May 2023 have been boosted after Hurzeler revealed that Ayari is an option and that there are no fresh injury concerns.

“I'm pretty sure he's an option tomorrow,” the Brighton boss told reporters in the pre-match press conference on Tuesday.

Hurzeler has also hit out at Arsenal for taking too long to deliver a set-piece, despite being the “best in the world” at them.

“Sometimes they spend one minute to take a corner if they are leading," he said. “The main topic is to make a clear rule on how much time you can waste for a corner, for a throw-in, for a free-kick.

“I think no-one recognises it, but when Arsenal have a corner and they are leading, sometimes they spend over one minute just to take a corner.

“Therefore, I think we just have to make clear rules. The game is changing so much.

“I have the opinion that every supporter who pays a lot of money to go to the stadiums and watch our games should see the same net-to-game time because they pay a lot of money.

“They want to see a football event and they don't want to see maybe 50 minutes the ball is in the game and 40 minutes the game is not.

“Therefore, that's how I see it, but I think we won't change these rules immediately.”

Danny Welbeck is expected to lead the line for Brighton against his former club and will be hoping to mark his contract being extended by a further year with a goal.
