Portuguese midfieldr Fábio Vieira produced a wonderful goal for Hamburg in their 1-1 draw with Koln in the Bundesliga on Saturday, which maintains an encouraging run of performances for the ex-Porto man in Germany.
Vieira latched onto a throughball by William Mikelbrencis to brilliantly lob his finish over visiting goalkeeper Marvin Schwabe, giving his side a first-half lead. Hamburg failed to maintain their advantage and Said El Mala’s equaliser just before the break ultimately saw a share of the spoils, but Vieira’s recent form is a huge positive for Portuguese observers.
On-loan from Premier League leaders Arsenal, the midfielder now has four goals from his last eight matches for Hamburg. With five goals to his name in the league so far, Vieira is just one more strike away from equalling his career-best tally of 6 top-flight goals in a season, registered for Porto in 2021-22 ahead of a high-profile move to England.
“It was a nice goal,” Vieira told the media after the match. “As soon as I made eye contact with Willi, I knew where he would play the ball. I’d also noticed that the ‘keeper was slightly off his line, and then I put it in the net.
“It was definitely one of the top three goals I’ve scored. I’m very happy about that. I’m gaining more and more confidence now and I’m feeling like the old Fábio again. Coming to Hamburg was an important step for me to get back to my full potential.”
“Vieira’s goal was world class”
Inevitably the goal has been much-shared across various media platforms. Speaking after the match. Hamburg boss Merlin Polzin said: “The goal was very well crafted and brilliantly finished. It’s definitely a strike we should be watching again and again.” Meanwhile, even Koln boss Lukas Kwasniok was forced to agree. “The opponents scored such a brilliant opener. That was world class from Vieira,” he conceded.
The result leaves Hamburg in a comfortable 10th place in the Bundesliga, which represents a strong return to the top flight following promotion from the second-tier.
