Fabregas furious with offside call in Milan-Como: “They stop when they like”

Cesc Fabregas and his Como thought they had made it 2-0 at San Siro, then VAR intervened and ruled it out for a narrow offside. Two minutes later, Milan equalised and after the game, the manager made his opinion known.

Como came away with zero points despite playing very well in front of the San Siro crowd. The offside call, admittedly, was very lucky from Milan’s point of view and one can understand Como’s frustration. On the other hand, the Rossoneri have had similar situations against them as well.

Interviewed by DAZN after the game, as transcribed by MilanNews, Fabregas shared his thoughts on the game. He stated that two moments of brilliance rescued Milan and also criticised the offside call, saying ‘they stop when they like’.

What was missing in the second half?

“They had two moments of magic and that’s why these players cost 60 million and play for Milan in front of 70 thousand spectators. We played an incredible game. I enjoyed seeing so many young players come here for the first time and play like this. Working like this all week and seeing what we’ve prepared materialise on the pitch, it’s a pleasure.”

Did the quality drop in the second half? Did Milan prevent you from managing the pace?

“I don’t know, we can’t expect to come here to San Siro and not expect Milan to push for the win. Then there’s this episode against us: the bad luck this season, a millimeter. For me it’s not offside, because if they stop a millisecond before it’s not offside: they stop when they like.

“In any case, congratulations to Milan. A great team for the Champions League and with world-class players,” he stated.

Of course, with the new semi-automated offside, the image is stopped when contact is made with the ball as per the sensor. In other words, the VAR referees no longer have to determine when contact is made, so Fabregas is slightly incorrect.
