Fabrizio Romano has shared the latest on Liam Rosenior’s future at Chelsea, with emergency meetings currently ongoing at Stamford Bridge to decide the head coach’s fate.
Following Tuesday’s demoralizing 3-0 defeat at Brighton, the Chelsea hierarchy has reportedly moved into crisis mode.
According to Romano, the board is “seriously considering a change of direction” after a catastrophic run of results that has seen the club’s Champions League ambitions evaporate.
While Rosenior had felt the support of the owners as recently as last week, the nature of the collapse at the Amex Stadium appears to have been the final straw.
Taking to X Fabrizio Romano confirmed that the internal discussions are intensifying.
“Meetings ongoing during the morning and again now at Chelsea to make final decision on Liam Rosenior’s future.
“The head coach always felt support from the hierarchy in recent weeks but results have been poor… and Chelsea are seriously considering a change of direction.”
The update highlights a significant shift in the club’s stance.
Despite the head coach’s public admission that the Brighton performance was “indefensible,” he had previously been viewed as a long-term project since his appointment in January.
However, with Chelsea failing to score in five consecutive Premier League games, a drought not seen at the club since 1912, the board’s patience has reached its limit.
If Rosenior is dismissed, he would become the sixth managerial casualty since the Todd Boehly-led consortium took control of the club in 2022.
The revolving door at Stamford Bridge has seen several high-profile exits, including:
This level of instability has drawn heavy criticism from pundits, as the club continues to struggle for a consistent identity despite spending over £1 billion on transfers.
Speculation regarding a successor is already rampant. Reports suggest that Xabi Alonso is among the leading candidates to replace Liam Rosenior if he is sacked.
Other options could include Andoni Iraola who is set to leave Bournemouth at the end of the season.
