Salah came off the bench in that game - providing an assist for Hugo Ekitike - and that seemed to be the end of the matter.

The 33-year-old is with Egypt at the Africa Cup of Nations and should return to a more settled environment when the Pharaohs’ participation is at an end.

The flashpoint between Salah and Slot has certainly left a mark at Anfield - solidifying Arne Slot’s position at what could have been a critical juncture.

Arne Slot solidifies power at Liverpool

The head coach’s job might have been on the line following a run of nine defeats in 12 but the club appears to have rallied around the Dutchman.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Slot’s “power” is now clear having received his paymasters’ backing. The upturn in results has helped of course and right now it looks as though Slot is out of the woods.

“And so the power of Arne Slot is very clear in terms of receiving the support from Liverpool.

“They trust the manager even in difficult situations and so Slot remains in control at Liverpool.

“Of course, the results have to improve, but recently it already improved, so they will have to continue this way.”
